Growing acorns
Photo: Maria O’Sullivan, Cromane National School
Even tho April is bringing sunny days, the nights are still chilly. Our Acorn Quest is in full swing and the students are enjoying watching the progress. We have been in to talk to some of the schools that enrolled into the pilot program about the mighty oak. It is so amazing to meet the students and let them rapid fire questions at us. We hope we did the Oak proud.
Most of the acorns have started to grow and have their first leaves. At this stage they will be staying in limbo until they are planted into soil, which will be the next step. During the Acorn Quest we send monthly videos to the classes with fun facts and what to do next. May will be about planting the acorns into pots with soil. At this point they can be gradually moved to the outdoors - called hardening off. They will be happy to grow for the next 2 years until we can plant them into their forever homes. These videos are made by the Transition Year students of the ISK in Killorglin.
