Tree planting
The winter is the best time for planting bareroot trees. They are surprisingly easy to plant as all you have to do is make a slit in the soil and heel the saplings in well. No need for digging large holes and watering them. The downside? The Irish weather. But when you have a good group to plant with, who cares.
We joined the crew from Gortbrack Organic Farm for a morning of planting hedgerows and trees on a small site outside Killorglin. We are keeping the weeds down by covering the soil around the trees with biodegradable plastic so that they will be low maintenance until the trees are large enough to withstand being surrounded by weeds.
